Hammer Series: Team-by-team guide

The inaugural edition of the Hammer Series will take place in Limburg, in the Netherlands, in June and will be contested by 16 teams, 12 of which are members of cycling’s top-tier UCI WorldTour.

Each team will be made up of seven riders, but they can only field five in each of the event’s three races: the Hammer Climb on June 2, the Hammer Sprint on June 3 and the Hammer Chase on June 4.

Below is a guide to all 16 teams.


Team: Manuele Boaro, Niccolò Bonifazio, Ivan Cortina, Ion Insausti and David Per.
Nation: Bahrain.
Sports director: Vladimir Miholjevic.
UCI status: WorldTour.
Strengths: Having fast finishers such as Haussler and Bonifazio in the squad will make Bahrain-Merida a force in the Hammer Sprint. 

BMC Racing


Team: Tom Bohli, Stefan Küng, Daniel Oss, Manuel Quinziato, Samuel Sánchez, Miles Scotson, Dylan Teuns.
Nation: United States.
Sports director: Jackson Stewart.
UCI status: WorldTour.
Strengths: BMC Racing are one of the best team time trial outfits in the world and could be tough to beat in the Hammers Chase.

Caja Rural-Seguros RGA


Team: Alex Aranburu, Miguel Angel Benito, Jon Irisarri, Jonathan Lastra, Nick Schultz, Josu Zabala.
Nation: Spain.
Sports director: Ruben Martinez.
UCI status: Pro Continental.
Strengths: Lastra and Irisarri are fast finishers who could claim a decent haul in the Hammer Sprint. Aranburu and Schulz are promising young talents who could fare well in the Hammer Climb.



Team: Tom-Jelte Slagter, Sep Vanmarcke, Wouter Wippert, Paddy Bevin, Tom Scully, Lawson Craddock, Will Clarke.
Nation: United States.
Sports director: Tom Southam.
UCI status: WorldTour.
Strengths: Wippert has a quick turn of pace and should collect plenty of points in the Hammer Sprint. Slagter is a punchy climber who is likely to do well in the Hammer Climb. 

Israel Cycling Academy


Team: Zakkari Dempster, Ben Perry, Mihkel Räim, Guy Sagiv, Dennis van Winden, Hamish Schreurs, Tyler Williams.
Nation: Israel.
Sports director: Kjell Calström.
UCI status: Pro Continental.
Strengths: Räim will be handy in the Hammer Sprint, while Van Winden and Dempster will provide power for the Hammer Chase.

Lotto Soudal


Team: André Greipel, Tim Wellens, Jens Debusschere, Moreno Hofland, Marcel Sieberg, Louis Vervaeke and Jelle Wallays.
Nation: Belgium.
Sports directors: Mario Aerts and Kurt Van de Wouwer.
UCI status: WorldTour.
Strengths: Greipel will be tough to beat in the Hammer Sprint and Wellens is well suited to the Hammer Climb.



Team: Carlos Barbero, Carlos Betancur, Nuno Bico, Héctor Carretero, Alex Dowsett, Jesús Herrada, Marc Soler.
Nation: Spain.
Sports director: Pablo Lastras.
UCI status: WorldTour.
Strengths:  Betancur, Soler and Herrada are all strong uphill and could be prolific in the Hammer Climb. Dowsett is a big engine for the Hammer Chase.

NIPPO Vini Fantini


Team: Damiano Cunego, Ivan Santaromita, Marino Kobayashi, Iuri Filosi, Nicolas Marini, Riccardo Stacchiotti and Alan Marangoni.
Nation: Italy.
Sports director: Mario Manzoni.
UCI status: Pro Continental.
Strengths: Cunego and Santaromita are both accomplished climbers, while Stacchiotti and Marangoni will add plenty of power in the Hammer Chase.



Team: Sam Bewley, Mitch Docker, Luke Durbridge, Alexander Edmondson, Caleb Ewan, Mathew Hayman, Roger Kluge.
Nation: Australia.
Sports director: Matt Wilson.
UCI status: WorldTour.
Strengths: Ewan is lightning fast and should pick up bucketloads of points in the Hammer Sprint. ORICA-SCOTT are also team time trial experts and will consequently be a formidable force in the Hammer Chase.

Quick-Step Floors


Team: Jack Bauer, Rémi Cavagna, Tim Declercq, Fernando Gaviria, Philippe Gilbert, Maximilian Schachmann, Zdeněk Štybar.
Nation: Belgium.
Sports director: Tom Steels.
UCI status: WorldTour.
Strengths: Gaviria’s electric pace should yield plenty of points in the Hammer Sprint, while Gilbert is perfect for the Hammer Climb. Quick-Step Floors are also usually excellent team time triallists for the Hammer Chase.

Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij


Team: Jesper Asselman, André Looij, Jeroen Meijers, Elmar Reinders, Nick van der Lijke, Brian van Goethem, Coen Vermeltfoort.
Nation: Netherlands.
Sports director: Michel Cornelisse.
UCI status: Pro Continental.
Strengths: Looij and Vermeltfoort will lead the challenge in the Hammer Sprint, while Van der Lijke and Meijers will hope to deliver points in the Hammer Climb.

Team LottoNL-Jumbo


Team: Dylan Groenewegen, Lars Boom, Juan Jose Lobato, Tom Leezer, Robert Wagner, Victor Campenaerts, Jos van Emden.
Nation: Netherlands.
Sports director: Nico Verhoeven.
UCI status: WorldTour.
Strengths: Groenewegen has established himself as one of the fastest finishers in the world in the past two seasons and will be strong in the Hammer Sprint. Lobato could prove potent in the Hammer Climb, while the likes of Boom and Van Emden will be strong in the Hammer Chase.

Team Sky


Team: Ian Boswell, Jon Dibben, Owain Doull, Tao Geoghegan Hart, Danny van Poppel, Elia Viviani.
Nation: Great Britain
Sports director: Servais Knaven.
UCI status: WorldTour.
Strengths: Tough to say until the full squad is named, but Van Poppel is a fast sprinter and Doull is an all-rounder who could do well in all three events.

Team Sunweb


Team: Tom Dumoulin, Max Walscheid, Ramon Sinkeldam, Lennard Kämna, Albert Timmer, Zico Waeytens.
Nation: Germany.
Sports director: Dirk Reuling.
UCI status: WorldTour.
Strengths: Dumoulin and Kelderman are both strong climbers and strong time-triallists, so they will be priceless assets in the Hammer Climb and Hammer Chase.



Team: Matthias Brändle, Laurent Didier, Ruben Guerreiro, Giacomo Nizzolo, Mads Pedersen, Jasper Stuyven, Boy van Poppel.
Nation: United States.
Sports director: Luc Meersman.
UCI status: WorldTour.
Strengths: Nizzolo is one of the fastest finishers in the sport and should bag plenty of points in the Hammer Sprint.

UAE Team Emirates


Team: Filippo Ganna, Andrea Guardini, Vegard Stake Laengen, Marko Kump, Yousif Mirza, Olivierio Troia, Federico Zurlo.
Nation: United Arab Emirates.
Sports director: Bruno Vicino.
UCI status: WorldTour.
Strengths: Guardini is a potent finisher who could deliver a decent haul in the Hammer Sprint. Ganna, Stake Laengen and Kump are good time-trial engines.

Don't miss
