Velon is owned by some of the leading teams in pro-cycling.

Join Velon and help tell their story to millions of passionate cycling fans around the world.

EDITORial lead (6 month contract role)

Velon wants to reach even more fans with our unique, innovative content during the 2021 Grand Tours and beyond.

Velon has extensive access to the sport and wants to tell the stories of the riders and teams in new and unique ways. A senior social media editor is needed to help ramp up, shape and operate our publishing operation.

This is a full-time contract role for six months, with the opportunity for extension at the end of the six months.

To work with Velon, you should have:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of, or interest in, professional cycling [or at the very least, evidence of a broad interest in sport and the ability to learn fast!]

  • Experience of taking responsibility for the operation of a content/editorial team - everything from recruitment and staff admin to creating production guidelines, sub-editing and publishing content.

  • Experience of working on content production during major sporting events.

  • 1-2 years minimum experience of working on social media content for sporting organisations or media outlets, alongside a strong understanding of the different characteristics of each platform and what works best for each audience.

  • Ability to think strategically about rider/team engagement and narrative development, and to turn the raw material available to Velon into news lines and engaging stories that help fans to connect with the sport.

  • Proven ability to use audience data to adapt and direct your work, and the work of your team, to ensure engagement and commercial targets are achieved. An ability to spot trends and translate these into opportunities and content.

  • Image and video editing skills that allow you to produce high-quality, social media native content that will engage fans and drive clicks. Proficiency with an industry-standard editing programme/software such as FCPX, Adobe Creative Cloud etc is desirable, as is a creative/innovative eye.

  • Ability to lead and contribute to short and medium-term editorial planning and review sessions.

  • Familiarity with working as part of a distributed team, keeping in touch over Zoom/Teams/et al.

  • Journalistic training or accreditation by a relevant educational institute or organisation [desirable, equivalent experience is acceptable].

  • English speaker, with the ability to speak and write fluently and idiomatically [essential]. Proficiency in French, Dutch, German, Italian and/or Spanish is a bonus, but not necessary for the role.

HOW TO APPLY

To apply for the role, we need the following:

  • Some examples of social media content that you’ve created in your career to date – can be for another brand/organisation, or from your own channels. Examples of working on specific campaigns and/or successful audience growth strategies would be a bonus.

  • A 100-200 word summary of how your experience meets the job description.

  • 100-200 words on your opinion of Velon’s social content and what you’d do to improve it.

  • 100-200 words on an idea for a new video format you’d propose Velon launches for this year’s Grand Tours.

Deadline: ASAP, with the intention of appointing the successful candidate to start no later than 26th April. Velon is a distributed organisation and all staff work remotely. Role is open to candidates based in the UK or EU.

Questions and applications should be sent to operations@velon.cc. If you’d like an informal conversation about the opportunity before applying, email us on that address and someone will respond and arrange a time to speak.
