Giro d'Italia 2020: Narvaez wins Stage 12

Jhonatan Narvaez took the first Grand Tour stage win of his career, and INEOS Grenadier’s third of this year’s Giro d’Italia, with a solo to victory on Stage 12.

The Ecuadorian had clipped off the front with Mark Padun (Bahrain-McLaren) but when the Ukrainian punctured on the descent of the San Giovanni in Galilea, the day’s final climb, Narvaez was able to open a gap.

Padun made a huge effort to try and make the distance back up, and at one point had come within 10 seconds of Narvaez, but the INEOS rider put the hammer down and won by just over a minute.

The day had seen a large break of 14 riders go, but it slowly disintegrated in poor weather conditions. At one point it looked like a GC shake up may be on the cards as NTT Pro Cycling pushed hard to set Domenico Pozzovivo up for the final climb, but the Italian left a move too late and the GC group came across the line together.

João Almeida (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) stays in pink for another day, with no change in the top three order or its time gaps, with Wilco Kelderman (Team Sunweb) and Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-McLaren) staying put.
