Tour of Flanders 2020: Van der Poel bags first Monument win

Matthieu van der Poel sealed the first Monument victory of his career by out-sprinting Wout Van Aert to win an exciting 104th edition of the Tour of Flanders.

The duo had attacked with Julian Alaphilippe (Elegant – Quick-Step) in the last 40km, but were left on their own after the world champion crashed out following a collision with a race motorbike.

Van Aert (Team Jumbo - Visma) and Van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) pressed on together over the Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg and then went toe-to-toe in the finale.

Van der Poel led out the sprint with Van Aert on his wheel, and despite Van Aert’s best efforts, he failed to round the Dutch champion, who wrapped up his triumph by the tightest of margins at the line.

A reduced peloton came home just eight seconds further behind, with 2015 winner Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) outpacing Anthony Turgis (Total Direct Energie) for the remaining spot on the podium.

Here’s a recap of some of the standout rider data recorded during the race:
