Giro d'Italia 2020: Jonathan Caicedo wins Stage 3

Jonathan Caicedo became the first breakaway rider to win a stage of the 2020 Giro d’Italia in what proved to be a day of high drama which saw Geraint Thomas and Simon Yates both fall off the pace.

Caicedo (EF Pro Cycling) had formed part of an eight-man group who escaped the clutches of the peloton early in the stage, and he dispatched of each one in turn as he powered his way up the final climb of Mount Etna.

The Ecuadorian champion wrapped up his win with a 21-second advantage over fellow escapee Giovanni Visconti (Vini Zabu – KTM), with late attacker Harm Vanhoucke (Lotto Soudal) crossing the line nine seconds further behind.

That result earned Caicedo the King of the Mountains jersey, but he was pipped to the pink jersey by Joao Almeida, despite sitting on the same overall time as the Deceuninck – Quick-Step rider.

It was a day to forget for Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers) and Yates (Mitchelton-SCOTT) though. Thomas suffered a crash in the neutral zone and the injuries sustained from that meant he lost 12 minutes 20 seconds on Ceicedo, ending his GC ambitions in the process.

Yates meanwhile, also struggled on the final climb, rolling home in 31st position, 4min 22sec off the pace.

Wilco Kelderman (Team Sunweb) is now best placed of the pre-race favourites in fourth position overall, two spots ahead of Vincenzo Nibali (Trek-Segafredo), five ahead of Jakob Fuglsang (Astana), and six ahead of Steven Kruijswijk (Team Jumbo-Visma).

Here’s a recap of some of the standout rider data recorded from the race:
