Wout Van Aert’s fine form continued at Milano-Sanremo as he outsprinted Julian Alaphilippe to win his first Monument by the tightest of margins.
The Team Jumbo-Visma rider has been on top form since racing resumed and backed up his Strade Bianche success with another consummate performance.
Van Aert hauled the attacking Alaphilippe back on the descent of the Poggio and the duo worked well together before going toe-to-toe on the Via Roma.
After 306km of racing Van Aert led out the sprint, and despite Alaphilippe’s best efforts, it was the Belgian who emerged victorious by less than a bike length.
After the race Van Aert said: “I’m super happy and I can’t believe I’ve taken these two victories in a row. To start the second half of the season like this is crazy and it’s really nice. It was hard to keep something back for the sprint but I did just enough.”
